Archive Management

Intelligent archiving is about managing your data over its life and its probability of access. The probability of a file being accessed goes down over time, reaching a point where the likelihood of access is practically non-existent. At some point in this cycle, the data is considered inactive or static, and should be removed from primary storage and moved to archive storage. In fact, research shows that on average, 70 percent of a company's data on primary storage is static and eligible to be archived. Companies that keep static data on primary storage are wasting their money, in both increased storage and power costs.

In addition to the explosive growth of data, the increase in many of today's laws and regulations (Sarbanes-Oxley, SEC 17a-4, HIPAA, FDA 21 CFR, FRCP, etc.) stipulate rules around data retention, deletion, authenticity, accessibility, and confidentiality. All of this has made it imperative that companies of all size relocate their static, digital data from expensive primary storage through intelligent archiving to a retention management system like the InfiniVault.

Compliance requirements, and the capital and operational cost of retaining data make it imperative to examine InfiniVault for long-term data retention. For example, 20TB of data, growing at 50% a year will cost 40X more to retain in a compliant fashion for the next five years on NAS, than on InfiniVault. Tape is 2X more expensive and optical is 4X. Retaining data for 7, 10, 20 or more years will produce even bigger savings for with InfiniVault solution.
