Independent Lab Certifies 30-Year Archive Life
for RDX Removable Disk Cartridge Solution
Research confirms ProStor Systems' RDX removable disk meets
all industry requirements for long-term data retention
BOULDER, Colo. – Oct. 9, 2007 – ProStor Systems, a leading developer of removable
disk storage solutions, today announced that RDX® removable disk technology has been
proven to provide long-term preservation of digital data with an archive life of at least 30
years. The research was published in a recently concluded study performed by an
independent, third-party testing organization, Percept Technology Labs, a well respected
U.S.-based hardware and software test lab.
ProStor Systems today also announced the world's first removable disk archive
and compliance system, based on RDX technology. The InfiniVault™ archive appliance
provides small and medium enterprises with an archiving solution that slashes storage
costs and delivers a fast, secure and reliable archival storage platform for long-term data
preservation, e-discovery and regulatory compliance. The Percept Labs' research
verifying a 30-year life expectancy for RDX cartridges helps to position ProStor's new
InfiniVault as the best solution available for long-term data retention.
Over the past year, Percept Technology Labs conducted a long-term study to
determine the expected data retention, reliability and archive life of ProStor's RDX removable disk media format when stored offline. This testing was designed using the
commonly accepted industry standard methods for highly-accelerated life testing of
storage media. ProStor collaborated with Seagate Technology [NYSE: STX] in the
design of the study to ensure that all relevant factors were considered, including
magnetic, mechanical, electronics and media effects. The test system included Seagate
Technology Momentus 5400.3 mobile 2.5" hard drives.
"The 30-year archive life test results for RDX are an exciting development as
users continue to replace magnetic tape with HDD technology for their data protection
and long-term archive applications," said Mike Winger, Seagate Executive Vice
President and General Manager, Personal Computers. "This clearly positions disk
technologies as the end-to-end solution from primary storage to offline archive."
Based on the quantitative accelerated life test method, Percept Technology Lab's
accelerated life testing subjected a large number of recorded RDX disk cartridges based
on 2.5" HDDs (along with a sample group of standard 3.5" desktop HDDs) to a matrix of
elevated storage temperatures and humidity as high as 80 degrees Celsius and 85% RH
for an extended period of time. The final results use the Eyring life-stress model to
predict that the RDX media lifespan in typical archival environments is at least 30 years
with 99% reliability.
"Our labs' extensive archive life testing on RDX removable disk systems
demonstrates that under normal storage conditions, data written on RDX disk cartridges
will maintain its integrity for 30 years and, under optimum conditions, for more than 100
years," said Brian Cleveland, President and CEO of Percept Technology Labs. "It is
clear that ProStor Systems designed its RDX disk cartridge and dock to meet the
industry's standard for long-term archival life expectancy," he said.
Arun Taneja, CEO of Taneja Group, agrees, "Dynamic access to tape-based
archives is excruciatingly slow," he said. "RDX technology provides best-in-class
random access performance that is well suited for the dynamic nature of nearline archival
storage and retrieval. In addition, most tape products claim a 30-year archive life, but the
technologies change every three to five years and, with every generation of tape, some
backward compatibility is lost forcing tape customers to migrate their data every five
years or so."
RDX removable disk systems, unlike tape, are forward and backward compatible,
meaning today's docks will work with tomorrow's cartridges and today's cartridges will
work with tomorrow's docks. For example, the recently announced RDX 300 GB
capacity cartridge is fully read/write compatible with the very first RDX systems shipped
last year.
"With its high capacity, fast data retrieval and long archive life, RDX removable
disk media offers SMB and enterprise users a superior alternative to magnetic tape," said
Steve Georgis, CEO and president of ProStor Systems. "Today's announcement brings
removable disk to the forefront of the storage lineup, with RDX technology providing
users with all the performance and reliability attributes of disk, and the portability and
archivability of tape."
RDX Removable Disk Cartridge Technology
The RDX removable disk cartridge was originally developed by ProStor Systems
to replace tape technology, including 4mm DAT, Travan, DLT and 8mm, with a new
solution that offers higher capacity, faster speed and lower cost. Deployed to back up and
archive data from servers and workstations, RDX removable disk technology provides a
safe, easy-to-use and portable storage choice for SMBs and SMEs. RDX ruggedized
media is available in 40, 80, 120, 160 and 300 GB capacities, with higher capacities
available in the future.
By leveraging RDX removable disk technology, ProStor has designed the
InfiniVault as the world's first archiving solution that combines the performance and
rapid retrieval of conventional hard disk drives with the unlimited capacity, scalability
and disaster recovery protection of removable media, with a system that is far more
reliable than tape.
About ProStor Systems
ProStor Systems develops, manufactures and markets RDXTM technology, the industry's first removable disk cartridge technology and the heir to tape storage for backup, disaster recovery and archive applications. RDX
