New 300 GB RDX Removable Disk Cartridge Capacity Vaults Ahead of
Tape Capacity for Backup/Archive of Small to Midsized Businesses
ProStor Systems delivers on RDX capacity roadmap
and accelerates market momentum
BOULDER, Colo. – Sept. 25, 2007 – ProStor Systems, a leading developer of removable disk storage solutions, today announced the latest boost in capacity in its line of RDX®
removable disk media – 300 GB of native storage capacity housed in a rugged removable
disk cartridge designed to provide small and medium-sized businesses with the greatest
reliability for backup and archive applications at less than half the price of competing
tape solutions.
Until the introduction of RDX removable disk backup solutions, tape was the
only viable medium for high-capacity backup and archiving. In its first year, RDX
removable disk technology has gained considerable market momentum, with an installed
base of more than 35,000 docks and almost 100,000 RDX disk cartridges. Driving this
acceleration is ProStor's commitment to rapid qualification of higher capacity cartridges,
such as today’s announcement of the new 300 GB RDX removable disk cartridge, which
provides 88 percent more storage per-cartridge than the current highest capacity 160 GB
RDX cartridge.
The rapid adoption of RDX technology demonstrates that users value the speed
and reliability of disk but still need high-capacity removable media for low-cost data
protection and disaster recovery applications. With a capacity roadmap increasing at
more than three times the rate of tape technology, RDX technology now offers higher
native storage capacity and backup speed than all leading tape formats used by SMBs.
ProStor Systems expects to qualify an RDX removable disk cartridge with 500 GB of
storage capacity in 2008.
"Customers need cost-effective removable storage to backup, archive and
safeguard their data in the face of ever-increasing storage requirements," said Robert
Amatruda, research director of tape and removable storage at IDC. "ProStor's RDX
technology addresses the need for high-capacity removable storage for low-cost data
protection and disaster recovery applications."
Unlike tape drives which introduce incompatibility with each new generation and
require the purchase of a new system, all RDX docks and cartridge capacities are fully
compatible and interchangeable. Users protect their technology investment simply by
choosing the RDX disk cartridge capacities, ranging from 40 GB to 300 GB, which suit
their specific applications.
"We continue to deliver on our commitment to advance the RDX roadmap to
keep pace with customer needs," said Bob Williamsen, vice president of marketing for
ProStor Systems. "The RDX solution provides SMB users with unmatched reliability,
the highest storage capacity and the fastest speed — making RDX the best data storage
value for the money."
The new 300 GB RDX removable disk cartridge is expected to be available in the
fourth quarter of 2007 from all licensed RDX manufacturers and from leading OEMs
under their respective brands.
RDX Removable Disk Cartridge Technology
RDX removable disk cartridge technology developed by ProStor Systems
replaces low-end tape, including DAT, Travan, DLT and 8mm, with a new solution that
offers higher capacity, faster speed and lower cost. Deployed to back up and archive data
from servers and workstations, RDX removable disk technology provides a safe, easy-touse
and portable storage choice for SMBs and SMEs. RDX ruggedized media is available
in 40, 80, 120, 160 and 300 GB capacities. RDX solutions are supported by most major
backup applications including CA ARCserve Backup, EMC Retrospect, Symantec
Backup Exec, Yosemite Backup, CommVault Galaxy data protection software and
CommVault Galaxy Express.
Each RDX disk cartridge houses a high-capacity mobile 2.5-inch hard disk drive
in a shock-proof design to allow the cartridge to sustain a fall from up to 39 inches. The
cartridge is inserted into a dock, which can be connected internally through SATA or
externally with a USB. The fast transfer rate of up to 45 MB/second reduces the typical
data backup window from hours to seconds, allowing a user to back up 100 GB of data in
less than an hour. Unlike tape, which winds sequentially to read data, RDX technology
accesses files in milliseconds, allowing for instant data retrieval. Visit
