Making the Right Removable Disk Cartridge Choice for Business

Is it time for tape to go? This is a fundamental question that more companies are revisiting as they evaluate their backup environment and the role of tape in it. Many companies initially adopted tape as their preferred medium for backup as it met their requirements for data protection at the time. It was cost-effective, it stored large amounts of data and it was portable, offering them a base-line means to archive their data, store data offsite or perform disaster recoveries. This situation no longer holds true for most companies. As corporate data growth continues and corporate expectations for data recoverability and accessibility rise, the shortcomings of tape are now in full focus.
The emergence of removable disk as a new target for backup is an antidote for the problem of tape. Faster, easier to configure, more reliable and dropping in price, removable disk is poised to become a viable replacement media for tape. Making this possible is a new class of disk drives housed in removable cartridges.
